Laser hair removal aftercare, the simple rules

When your session ends, half the work is done and the other half is down to your aftercare. Here is what to do from the first hours until your next visit.

Laser hair removal aftercare, the simple rules

After laser hair removal, your skin stays sensitive for a few days. Looking after it well in this window keeps you comfortable and protects your results. Laser hair removal aftercare is not complicated, you only need to know a handful of rules.

What is normal right after a session

You may see mild redness and feel some warmth on the zone. Sometimes small bumps appear around the follicles. This is a normal skin reaction to the laser and it usually settles within a few hours.

How strong the reaction is depends on the zone and your skin. Delicate areas such as the bikini line and underarms may look a little redder, while legs usually settle faster. If the hair is dark and dense, the reaction is a bit stronger in the first sessions and softens as the course goes on.

For sensitive skin we use a soothing foam when needed, and our Zimmer cold-air unit cools the skin throughout the session. That is why most clients leave the studio feeling calm.

The first 48 hours of laser hair removal aftercare

The first 24-48 hours matter most. During this time, protect your skin from heat, friction and irritants:

  • Avoid the sauna, steam room, hot baths and the pool. Choose a lukewarm shower over a hot one.
  • Put sweaty workouts on hold for a day or two. Sweat and friction irritate sensitive skin.
  • Keep scrubs, acids and alcohol-based lotions off the zone for a few days.
  • Skip tight synthetic clothing. After a bikini session, cotton underwear is the better choice.
  • If you had your underarms done, leave out deodorant on the first day.

The logic is simple. The laser heats the hair follicle, and the skin stays warm from the inside for a while. Heat, sweat and friction drag that out and make redness and irritation worse. One or two calm days are enough for the skin to recover.

A gentle moisturiser or soothing gel is fine. Do not rub the zone, pat it dry with a towel.

Sun and SPF

For about 2 weeks after a session, no fresh tan and no sunbed. On exposed zones such as your legs, apply SPF 50 every day and reapply during the day. The sun in Baku is strong for most of the year, so this rule is not only for summer.

Why does it matter so much? After a session your skin reacts to the sun more easily, and tanning in this window raises the risk of pigment marks. A tan can also mean your specialist has to lower the settings or postpone your next session.

If your course runs through the warm months, our article on laser hair removal in summer will help.

What black dots are

A few days after a session, some clients notice small black dots on their skin and worry. This is normal. The black dots are hairs burnt at the root, and they leave on their own within 7-14 days.

Not everyone gets the same number of black dots. They are usually more visible where hair is dark and dense, such as the bikini line and legs. As the course goes on and hair thins out, there are fewer of them.

Do not squeeze them or pull them out with tweezers. Once the first few days have passed, a gentle scrub and regular moisturiser help them along.

Why hair does not fall out straight away

The laser does not make hair vanish instantly. After a session, hair sheds gradually over 7-14 days. During this time it can look as if it is still growing. In fact, the treated hair is working its way out of the skin.

Do not pull the hairs, and do not use an epilator, wax or tweezers. If you need to, shave only. If you remove the root, the laser has nothing to target at your next session.

Between sessions

A main course is usually 6-8 sessions. Your specialist sets the interval individually, usually 4-6 weeks for the face and 6-8 weeks for the body. Our clients usually notice after the first 1-2 sessions that hair grows back sparser, finer and slower.

On the bikini line, hair sometimes comes back faster. The reason can be hormonal or genetic, and friction from tight synthetic clothes plays a part too. If you suspect a hormonal issue, see an endocrinologist or gynaecologist.

To be honest with you: laser reduces hair long term, but a 100% "forever" result is not a promise. Some clients may need a maintenance session years later, especially after hormonal changes. That is normal and takes far less time than the main course.

Your first touch-up after the first session is free. Later touch-ups are rarely needed, and if they are, they cost 5 AZN. To get ready for your next visit, see our guide on preparing for a session.

FAQ

When can I shower after a session?

A lukewarm shower is fine the same day. Avoid hot baths, the sauna and the pool for the first 24-48 hours.

When do the black dots go away?

They are hairs burnt at the root and usually leave on their own within 7-14 days. After the first few days, a gentle scrub and moisturiser help.

How should I remove hair between sessions?

Shave only. Wax, tweezers and epilators remove the root and make the next session less effective.
