Alexandrite vs diode laser, which one should you choose

Alexandrite vs diode laser is the question we hear most from women choosing laser hair removal in Baku. Here is a calm, factual comparison so you can decide what suits your skin and hair.

Alexandrite vs diode laser, which one should you choose

Most clinics in Baku work with diode or "Soprano"-type machines. At our studio in Narimanov we use an original Candela Alexandrite laser. This article is not here to say "ours is better". Both technologies work. They simply suit different people to different degrees. Let's look at it calmly.

How a laser removes hair

Both lasers work on the same principle. Light hits the pigment in the hair, melanin, turns into heat and weakens the follicle. That is why the darker the hair and the lighter the skin, the more precisely a laser works. Skin contains melanin too, so the whole point is to get the energy into the hair while heating the skin as little as possible.

The difference is wavelength. It decides how strongly the light is absorbed by melanin and how deep it travels into the skin. That is why two lasers with the same goal give different results on different skin and hair types.

The Alexandrite laser at 755 nm

Alexandrite works at 755 nm, a wavelength that melanin absorbs very well. In practice that means:

  • strong results on dark hair of medium thickness;
  • a good effect on finer dark hair too;
  • the best outcomes on light to medium skin (Fitzpatrick types I-IV);
  • large areas such as legs and back are treated fairly quickly.

It has limits as well. Very dark or freshly tanned skin needs caution. A consultation comes first, and sometimes this laser is not the right fit. White, grey and very light blonde hair cannot be treated by any laser, Alexandrite included, because there is no melanin to target.

Diode lasers and Soprano-type machines

Diode lasers usually work around 800-810 nm. This light goes a little deeper and is absorbed by melanin less strongly than Alexandrite. As a result:

  • diode is generally considered the more cautious choice for darker skin;
  • it works well on thick, dark hair;
  • on fine or lighter hair the effect can sometimes be weaker.

"Soprano"-type machines are diode lasers too. What sets them apart is the technique. The specialist keeps the handpiece moving over the skin and warms the area gradually with many low-energy passes. Many people describe the feeling as a gentle warmth. The approach has its place, but the result depends heavily on the quality of the machine, the settings and the specialist's experience.

Alexandrite vs diode laser, who suits which

In short:

  • Light or medium skin, dark hair. Alexandrite is a very strong choice. Hair usually becomes sparser, finer and slower to grow after the first 1-2 sessions.
  • Fine but dark hair (for example on the face or arms). Alexandrite's high melanin absorption gives it an edge here.
  • Very dark skin or a fresh tan. Diode is often considered safer. For Alexandrite a consultation beforehand is a must.
  • White, grey or very light blonde hair. No laser helps, and we will tell you so honestly.

We cover darker skin in detail in a separate article, Alexandrite laser on darker skin.

Why an original machine matters

There are many copies of both Alexandrite and diode machines on the market. Even when the same wavelength is printed on paper, real results depend on stable energy, precise pulses and good cooling. A weak or unstable machine causes one of two problems. Either it does not affect the hair enough and the course drags on, or it heats the skin more than it should.

Our machine is an original Candela Alexandrite (2025). Throughout the session the skin is cooled with a Zimmer cold-air unit, for both comfort and protection. You can read more about the technology on our Candela Alexandrite page.

Sessions and price

Whatever the laser, hair grows in cycles, so one session is never enough. Our main course is 6-8 sessions. The specialist sets the interval individually, usually 4-6 weeks for the face and 6-8 weeks for the body. There is more in our guide on how many sessions you need.

Let's be open about price too. Full body laser in many Baku clinics costs 69-95 AZN. Our full body and face package is 40-60 AZN depending on the pulse count and takes 45-60 minutes. A cheap session can end up costing more if the machine is weak and the course stretches out. All zone prices are on our prices page, and the package is explained on the full body page. You can also split payment over 3 or 6 months.

Preparation and safety

The machine is half the job. The other half is preparation and the specialist:

  1. Shave the area 12-24 hours before the session.
  2. Avoid waxing, plucking and epilators for about 4 weeks, because the laser needs the root.
  3. Avoid sun and sunbeds for about 2 weeks before and after.
  4. Tell the specialist in advance about pregnancy, medication (for example isotretinoin), herpes or a fresh tattoo in the area.

Our laser specialist is Fatima Aliyeva. Visits are by appointment only, there is no waiting line, and only you and the specialist are in the room.

The bottom line

Alexandrite and diode are not rivals, they are different tools. For light to medium skin with dark hair, an original Alexandrite laser is a very effective choice. For very dark skin, diode may suit better. What matters most is an original machine, the right settings and honest advice.

FAQ

Is Alexandrite better than a diode laser?

Not for everyone. Alexandrite is very effective on light to medium skin with dark hair, while diode is often considered the more cautious choice for very dark skin.

How is Soprano different from Alexandrite?

Soprano-type machines are diode lasers that warm the area gradually with many gentle passes. Alexandrite at 755 nm acts more strongly on melanin, especially on fine dark hair.

Does Alexandrite work on grey or white hair?

No. Grey, white and very light blonde hair has no melanin, so no laser can treat it, Alexandrite included.
