Laser hair removal and PCOS, realistic expectations

With PCOS, unwanted hair has an internal cause, while laser only acts on the hair itself. We explain the doctor's role, what laser can really do and why maintenance matters.

Laser hair removal and PCOS, realistic expectations

Many women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) deal with unwanted hair on the face, neck, stomach or chest. It is not just cosmetic. It affects everyday comfort and confidence. Laser hair removal can help with PCOS, but it is important to know up front what it can do and what it cannot. In this article we keep it honest, with no promise of a miracle.

PCOS and unwanted hair

With PCOS the hormonal balance can shift, and hair may grow thicker, darker and denser. It most often appears on the chin, upper lip, neck, the middle of the stomach and the chest. Some women also find that hair in the bikini area grows back faster.

The key difference is that the cause is internal. Laser acts on the hair follicle, not on the hormones themselves. So with PCOS the result can differ from the usual picture and needs more patience. That does not mean laser fails. It simply means expectations need to be set correctly.

Many women spend years fighting hair with razors, tweezers or wax. Shaved hair is visible again within days, while tweezing and waxing irritate the skin and can lead to ingrown hairs. On the chin and neck this is especially noticeable. Laser helps break that cycle, because it acts on the root rather than just the hair above the skin.

Doctor first, then laser

If hair growth has increased suddenly, your cycle is irregular or you have other symptoms, the first step is an endocrinologist or gynaecologist. Finding the cause and prescribing treatment where needed is a doctor's job, not a laser specialist's.

We do not diagnose and we do not advise on hormone treatment. But medical care and laser work well together. Your doctor deals with the internal cause, while laser reduces the hair that is already there. Always tell the specialist which medication you take, since some drugs make skin more sensitive to light.

What laser hair removal can do with PCOS

The Candela Alexandrite laser (755 nm) targets the pigment in dark hair. With PCOS the hair is usually dark and coarse, which makes it a good target. That is why many women notice after the first 1-2 sessions that hair grows sparser, finer and more slowly.

You can expect:

  • noticeably fewer hairs;
  • remaining hairs that are finer and lighter;
  • far less need to shave or use other methods;
  • less irritation and fewer ingrown hairs.

What not to expect: laser does not rebalance hormones and cannot fully stop new follicles from becoming active. Over time some new hairs may appear. That is not the treatment failing, it is the nature of PCOS.

Sessions and maintenance

The main course is usually 6-8 sessions. With PCOS you may need more, and maintenance sessions are planned after the course. The specialist sets the interval individually, usually 4-6 weeks for the face and 6-8 weeks for the body.

How often maintenance is needed varies from woman to woman. Some need it a few times a year, others less. Your first touch-up after the first session is free with us, and later touch-ups are rarely needed and cost 5 AZN. For general guidance, see our post on how many laser sessions you need.

The zones that bother women most

With PCOS the face is the most common reason women come to us. Our prices by zone:

  • upper lip 3 AZN, chin 5 AZN, cheeks 5 AZN;
  • throat 5 AZN, neck 10 AZN;
  • full face 13 AZN;
  • stomach 10 AZN, chest 10 AZN.

If you need several zones, the full body and face package may work out better. It takes 45-60 minutes and costs 40-60 AZN depending on pulse count. Instalments over 3 and 6 months are available. Read more about the face on our facial laser hair removal page, and see every price on the price list.

Before and after a session

The preparation rules are the same as usual, they just matter even more with PCOS:

  1. Shave the zone 12-24 hours before the session.
  2. Stop waxing, tweezing and epilating about 4 weeks before, because the root needs to be in place.
  3. Avoid tanning for 2 weeks before and after.
  4. For 24-48 hours afterwards, skip the sauna, hot baths and the pool, and use SPF 50.

Tweezing chin and neck hairs is a very common habit for women with PCOS. During the course it is important to stop, because laser cannot act on a hair that has been pulled out. After a session the hairs shed gradually over 7-14 days.

How it works with us

The Laser Point is a women-only studio in Narimanov, Baku. Visits are by appointment only, the door is closed and only you and our specialist Fatima Aliyeva are in the room. This topic is sensitive for many women and we understand that well. Nobody here will judge you.

During treatment a Zimmer cold-air unit cools the skin, and most clients describe the sensation as a short warm snap. Disposable towels and slippers are included.

We work with an original Candela Alexandrite laser. It performs especially well on dark, coarse hair, which is exactly the kind PCOS tends to cause. You can read more on our Candela Alexandrite page. We are at 6a Nazim Hajiyev street, near Narimanov park. We are open Monday 10:00-19:00 and the rest of the week 10:00-23:00, so you can come after work or classes.

Laser hair removal with PCOS is a longer road, but it can be calm and well managed. If you have spoken to your doctor and feel ready to start, book your first session. You can ask any questions when you book.

FAQ

Can I have laser hair removal if I have PCOS?

Yes, PCOS on its own is not a contraindication. We do recommend speaking to an endocrinologist or gynaecologist first and telling the specialist about any medication you take.

Will laser remove PCOS hair forever?

Laser reduces hair long-term, but it does not rebalance hormones. New hairs can appear over time, so maintenance sessions are planned after the course.

How many sessions do I need with PCOS?

The main course is usually 6-8 sessions, and with PCOS you may need more. The specialist builds your plan individually based on how your hair responds.

This article is general information and does not replace medical advice. If you have a skin condition, are pregnant or take medication, tell the specialist before the procedure.
